NODAKI Inc.

Expertise developed over 110 years since the company's founding, with a vision for the next generation
A trading company specializing in machine tools helps create a low-carbon society.

NODAKI is a trading company founded in 1907 specializing in machine tools. In the 110 years we have been active, we have contributed to the growth of many of the world's leading manufacturers. With each one, we have walked alongside them since their founding, responding to their needs and sharing in times of both difficulty and joy. That is why we make recommendations by considering each manufacturer’s unique characteristics, regulations, accumulated knowledge, and improvement processes, among other factors. Nodaki's history is a history of challenges, and we are what we are today because we have changed with the times. With an eye on the next 100 years, Nodaki will continue to progress forward, inheriting the spirit of challenge that we have cultivated over the years.

Reliability and integrity underpinning the company contributes to economic and cultural development One of Nodaki's strengths is the know-how and connections we have developed over the years. Our robust network with over 700 suppliers gives us confidence that we can always provide the products our customers need. What's more, the Nodaki Group has acquired ISO14001 certification and maintains high standards for environmental management.

A specialized trading company providing the manufacturing industry with comprehensive support As a specialized trading company, Nodaki handles a huge range of products, including cutting tools, grinding tools, tool holders, inspecting and measuring tools, molds and jigs, workpieces, machinery and equipment, environmentally friendly products, and more.
Our ability to adapt solutions to any particular need allows our sales personnel to provide optimal proposals to customers having a hard time selecting a grinding tool for cemented carbide, cermet, and other materials that are difficult to cut. In addition, we offer our customers comprehensive support for their manufacturing processes, with solutions including technical support, consulting, suggestions for special-order items, and construction services. We aim to be a partner in helping our customers achieve sustainable growth through our "Challenge for the NEXT 100" corporate vision.

Our commitment to achieving SDGs and formulating our BCP Since the 1980s, Nodaki has been involved in a carbide tool recycling program in an effort to eliminate the risks to domestic supplies of tungsten and other rare metals resulting from a dependence on imports.
With a deeply rooted awareness about solving social and environmental issues through our business activities, the company established an SDGs Promotion Committee and is engaged in collecting plastic bottle caps, going paperless, and other daily efforts.
In addition, understanding how essential the power of workers is to our customers' sustainable manufacturing processes, we have collaborated with a sweet manufacturer in joint development of the Salty Vitamin Jelly Work Partner that is effective in preventing heatstroke by replenishing electrolytes at the same concentrations recommended by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. This demonstrates our customer commitment not only in providing machinery tools and solutions, but also in health management. Furthermore, prompted by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, we have been developing our business continuity plan (BCP) that incorporates measures to ensure the safety of employees and the local community and to maintain and quickly restore operations. The procedures include distribution of portable disaster prevention cards and creation of hazard maps for each site. Our BCP has been certified by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry as a "Business Continuity Enhancement Plan." We will regularly review, improve, and promote our BCP both within and outside the company.

What a specialized trading company can do to achieve carbon neutrality Nodaki supports the Aichi Global Warming Prevention Strategy 2030.
We are further intensifying efforts to reduce environmental impacts as required by ISO 14001 and actively working to achieve our targeted 26% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. There are, however, limitations to what a specialized trading company can do to become carbon neutral via the “sale of products." Nodaki has taken a new approach to contribute to carbon neutrality through the following "sales of services."
• Proposals to extend the life of carbide tools through regrinding and coating
• Proposals for recycling carbide waste
• Proposals for visualizing electric power consumption (demand monitoring systems, energy monitors, etc.)
• Proposals for extending coolant service life and sludge recovery
• Proposals for renewable energy and energy savings (non-fossil certificates, solar power, conversion to LEDs, heat-resistant coatings, etc.)
This specialized trading company's functions include leveraging our industry-leading network to create a catalog of Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP) and use that in suggesting environmentally friendly products. Low-carbon efforts within the company include switching vehicles in the company fleet to EVs and PHEVs, reducing power consumption by installing solar panels and storage batteries, and using non-fossil certified renewable energy.

Responding to climate change

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Acquisition of the Science Based Targets (SBT)

Reduction targets

●Reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% compared to 2022 by 2030

●Identify and reduce Scope 3 emissions

* The above targets are certified at the most ambitious 1.5°C level that can be certified under the current process.

Base year GHG inventory

CO2 emissions of the base year are as follows.

Base Year: 2022

Scope1:253.2 tCO2

Scope2:97.5 tCO2

Analysis of risks and opportunities stemming from future climate change

We have assumed the following risks and corresponding opportunities associated with future climate change scenarios.

【Risks

●Business disruption caused by suspension of transport infrastructure

Increase in costs related to disclosure of product information due to policies and regulations mandating greater information disclosure

●Shifts in consumer behavior lead to product demand changes, causing significant fluctuations in product sales.

【Opportunities】

Greater transaction is expected due to an increase in low-carbon products as clients become more environmentally aware.

Increased demand for equipment replacement is expected as manufacturers work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the needs for environmentally conscious technologies grow.

Promoting energy conservation and use of renewable energies and accumulating expert knowledge will further enhance trust in supply chains both upstream and downstream.

Comprehensive support for manufacturers’ manufacturing sites will lead to expectations of expanded circulation in the circular economy.

Interview

Background on Participation in this Project

Our company has supported and grown together with manufacturing companies, primarily those in Aichi Prefecture. In response to social pressures, our clients have recently been working towards achieving carbon neutrality. We have participated in this project so that we may grow together with our customers as a supporter by disclosing information regarding carbon neutrality.

Findings and impressions after participating

Since we acquired ISO 14001 certification, we have centralized management of data for our domestic bases. This has enabled us to quickly grasp the volume of activity in calculating greenhouse gas emissions. With our overseas sites, however, data has been managed in each local manner. This has made it difficult to comprehend the data at times, leading us to realize the significance of international certification. Through the initiatives, we would like to work in step with our customers towards achieving carbon neutrality and grow into a company that can support even better manufacturing.

Future proposals from our company

Our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, unlike the manufacturing industry’s, do not contribute much to the creation of a low-carbon society. However, I believe that by looking at things from the same perspective as those in the manufacturing industry and sharing our way of thinking, we can supply them with what our customers really need. Going forward, we will not only disclose greenhouse gas information for our products and services, we will also expand the range of our products and technologies to respond immediately to opportunities that our customers seek. We will continue to propose products and services that help customers achieve carbon neutrality.
