Curbing Waste Incineration by Reusing Scrap Wood: The Company Creating Outlets for Wooden Materials and Aiming for a Recycling-Oriented Society

TOKIWA LUMBERTEC Co., Ltd. has been dealing with wood for more than 80 years since our establishment. We have continued to take advantage of our expertise in material selection and processing as we take on challenges under our motto of "Happo yoshi" (Good all around). As professionals in wood, which is a sustainable material, we will continue to introduce products and services that respond to the changing times and work toward a new harmony between people and nature.

Developing wood that makes the impossible possible We provide a one-stop service from product planning to manufacturing to process control with wood-based materials. When a customer has an idea for something they want to make, we make the idea a reality. We can combine wood with other materials like steel and others if necessary. With wood-based materials, nothing is impossible.

About us We are a total solution company for wood materials.
We develop building and industrial materials, manufacture wood products on consignment, stock and sell wood materials, and perform finishing work in-house. For all of our businesses, the common idea is that we handle products that meet the customer needs from planning to manufacturing to process management, creating "outlets" for wooden materials that lead to customer satisfaction. In our product development, we incorporate technologies that combine wood with other materials to deliver products for a wide range of industries, from bookshelves for large bookstores to cash register counters for convenience stores to shoe racks for public bathhouses.
Feel free to contact us for all your wood material needs. There is nothing we can't do when it comes to anything that uses wood.

Mission Statement for a Recycling-Oriented Society We aim to use wood as the centerpiece for creating a new harmony with nature, and to realize a recycling-oriented society with wood at its core. We have been making efforts to create a new cycle by focusing on using local materials, including a project we started to create a kit for growing morning glories using hardwoods at an elementary school in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture, and the development of camping gear using wood from the Higashi Mikawa District in Aichi Prefecture, both of which were based on the concept of environmental conservation. At our cre8 BASE KANAYAMA,a digital fabrication facility, we hold workshops and provide opportunities to easily enjoy making things with the aim for bringing the joy of making things to everyone. If we can create an environment where artisans can have a goal and expand their creativity, we are playing a role in promoting the effective use of wood and in manufacturing from a micro perspective.

Replacing longstanding efforts with SDGs Since our establishment in 1936, TOKIWA LUMBERTEC has conducted our business with “good environment, good work" as our guiding principle. Over the years, we have established the cornerstone of our business to address global environmental and social challenges, while prioritizing the long-term well-being of local communities through ongoing initiatives, which was not a common thinking at the time of our founding. As a company that handles wood, a sustainable resource, we replace our past efforts with current SDGs and take the following measures toward meeting each goal.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Goal 15: Life on Land
For all material composition for future projects and contracted products, we will use sustainably sourced products through official, legitimate means of procurement.
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals
1. In Nagoya and surrounding areas, we will continue to support entrepreneurial activities aimed at addressing social issues in both the public and private sectors.
2. We will launch our "TOKIWA Product" BtoC service and develop products based on sustainable forest resources.

Efforts to develop new environmentally friendly products

Development of camping equipment using upcycled wood

・Upcycled Offcut Freeboards

Product Features

This freeboard is versatile, as it can be used as a cutting board, pot mat, or wood plate. Conventional pot mats are often discarded when burnt, but this product’s cutting decoration on one side makes it stand out, and the product becomes more beautiful the more it is used. With this product, our goal is to raise environmental awareness among camping enthusiasts.

Points leading to green innovation

This is an upcycled product made from timber offcut that would otherwise be incinerated. The more the product is used, the more its character develops, which encourages its long-term use and contributes to waste reduction.

Interview

Background on Participation in this Project

We have been engaged in craftsmanship with various wood processing manufacturers since our establishment. We have promoted SDG-related activities to increase the percentage of the use of domestic timber. Carbon neutrality tends to focus on the macro perspective of the global environment, but we participated in this project in the hope that we could make general consumers more aware of the micro perspective of valuing forests and trees close to home, and focusing on domestic forest conservation as well.

Findings and impressions after participating

In this project, we focused on developing a new system, starting with securing routes to purchase materials to be upcycled with a consistent degree of quality, and then applying manufacturing processes for their intended uses. Through field tests of prototypes and participation in outdoor events, we were able to receive positive responses from the users.

Future proposals from our company

Since we are a manufacturer that deals with BtoB and BtoBtoC products, we do not publicize our own deliverables due to confidentiality agreements with our clients. Despite the time constraints and manpower issues we faced, this was a valuable opportunity to publicize our company’s efforts both internally and externally. It was great for us being able to work on the development of our own products with the governmental support under the theme of SDGs to increase the percentage of the use of domestic timber. We hope opportunities like this will give us new networks for future businesses and develop into new ventures.
